You may run into instances where there is no enamel on that tooth anymore, and it's just dentin exposed, right? And the cool thing about microhydroxyapatite is it can still go in, penetrate those dentinal tubules. I've been using it over the last couple of months. I've seen sensitivity go down like immediately.Everyone's level though of sensitivity is different. Um, every tooth behaves differently. Um, so it's hard to put like a generic generalization. Okay. Um, that's because since the dine is nothing more than, than think of it as like clay that gets kind of overlaid on the teeth and it's easy to wash out for people out there that have tried tablets in the past.
All tablets are not the same. Yep. Welcome to minty fresh takes presented by enamel, the podcast where we explore the latest trends, science, and personal stories behind oral wellness. I'm your host Xander. And today we have a jam packed show covering some of the most important topics in oral care. From celebrities to experts in the field, you're sure to hear dentistry content done in a fun way.
So sit back, grab your popcorn and your floss because you'll need it after and enjoy this conversation. Thanks for listening. We're back with a brand new episode with Dr. Jordan Harper inset. Thank you guys so much for joining us today. We're talking all about micro hydroxy appetite. Are you ready? I'm ready.
What is it? What is it? So, um, Hydroxyapatite is a mineral, microhydroxyapatite, uh, just like the name implies is a smaller synthesized version of the mineral. Your teeth are made up of 97 percent hydroxyapatite. That's where the hardness comes from. It's the hardest substance in the human body. So, uh, I like to say calcium for your bones, hydroxyapatite for your teeth, um, and, and that's what hydroxyapatite is.
Now the benefits of it, obviously, that we're placing it in the brand new toothpaste tabs that we have coming out with enamel. What are the benefits of it from a toothpaste tab? So from a, from a toothpaste standpoint, the biggest thing is you don't need. extraneous compounds and chemicals and stuff like that for hydroxyapatite to work.
For fluoride to work, you need phosphate, calcium, there's a reaction that occurs, right? And basically it kind of creates like an armor all coating on the existing hydroxyapatite, right? And so, um, it creates something called fluorohydroxyapatite, right? Well, you run into instances, right, where Um, let's say, uh, because of erosion from acidic foods we eat and drink, abrasion from, you know, uh, uh, you know, tooth brushing, um, uh, abfractions that form due to like mechanical occlusion loads and that type of thing.
You may run into instances where there is no abrasion. enamel on that tooth anymore and it's just dentin exposed, right? And the cool thing about microhydroxyapatite is it can still go in penetrate those dentinal tubules, right? Um, and and create that armor that that fluoride can't do. With the fluoride reaction that has to happen for those toothpastes It seems like the coating is not actually getting to the root cause of the issue.
Correct. Yeah. So, so yeah, when fluoride does its reaction thing with hydroxyapatite, it creates the fluorohydroxyapatite. I use the analogy of like arm roll on like car plastic, that type of thing, right? Um, it's something that's there, but does indeed wear off, right? Um, the cool thing about the microhydroxyapatite that we're finding is on a microscopic level, um, you're starting to see These mineral molecules, right, um, actually be reabsorbed, reuptaken into the tooth to help remineralize it.
Right? And that's just something, it's a phenomenon that just can't occur with fluoride, um, because fluoride is not naturally in the tooth. Right? And so, um, so because you're using something that's naturally, um, Uh, a part of the tooth. Um, that's where the major, major benefit comes from. Now, obviously with the brand new toothpaste tabs that we've been using, I've been using it over the last couple of months.
I've seen sensitivity go down like immediately. For somebody jumping in with this brand new toothpaste tab. What, how quickly would, should they expect to see their sensitivity decrease? Depends on how good they're brushing. Okay. All right. Um, you know, if you're doing it, if you're doing it, you know, good quality brushing two minutes in the morning, two minutes at night, um, I would say within a week, you're going to start noticing a difference, um, within a month it's going to be a game changer.
Um, everyone's level though of sensitivity is different. Um, every tooth behaves differently. Um, so. It's hard to put like a generic generalization, um, but I've definitely had, um, I've, I've been giving it to patients with, with severe sensitivity and I've had positive feedback within a week of going, Whoa, I'm starting to notice a difference even better.
You know, these are chronic Sensodyne users and I'm starting to know they're going, Whoa, I'm not even noticing better than that. And that's because Sensodyne is nothing more than, than think of it as like clay that gets kind of overlaid on the teeth and it's easy to wash out. And so that's just kind of the physics behind how it works.
Right. Microhydroxyapatite just gets to the point of the matter faster and is more effective. And aside from the sensitive teeth feeling and being able to really repair that pretty quickly. One thing I love about the actual product is the, the texture of it, of the toothpaste halves. It is, it is so, now feels foreign to me that I would ever go back to actual toothpaste again.
I couldn't agree more. I mean, I've been, you know, maybe I'm biased, right? But I'm, I'm coming, I've been using them a solid year now, um, since we had our samples fabricated. And, um, Yeah, it's like the convenience of a tablet, the mouthfeel of our particular toothpaste. And that's the other thing is, for people out there that have tried tablets in the past, all tablets are not the same.
Um, the, I've tried all the competitors, they're trash. Uh, the mouthfeel's awful. Um, it does not feel like this nice, velvety, clean feeling you get. Um, none of the other tablets on the market are gonna make you feel like you have left the dentist after a cleaning. That's what our tablets feel like. Yeah. And everyone says that.
Yeah. And, and one last question I have about this. Making your teeth white. That's the big deal. Obviously today, everybody's on Instagram. Everybody's on Facebook when they're smiling. They want white teeth. What is the benefit of micro hydroxy appetite to making your teeth white? It's in a brighter smile.
So that's a great segue for what's coming. So we have an exciting product coming. That's going to be one of the first of its kind. It's going to be a whitening tablet. Um, where Our manufacturer was actually able to get the oxidizing agent, which is what you use to whiten your teeth, stable in a non aqueous environment.
So aka, meaning it's stable without needing water because that's typically what oxidants need to be stabilized. So it's not in a solution. It's in a dry powdered tablet form and they were able to keep it stable. So we're going to have a a actual whitening toothpaste tablet coming to market. Oh, it should be really, really cool.
That'll be unbelievable. Do you have some sort of timeline on that? They are telling us hopefully completion by the end of the year. So we would be looking at a q1 launch of next year. That'll be big. That'll be huge. That'll be big. Be the first on the market. Well, that's right. Well, listen, That is everything we need to know about micro hydroxy appetite for it to benefit us in our day to day, uh, oral care.
system. Is there anything else that you want to add to that? Um, no, I think, I think the, the, the biggest take home for me with the microhydroxyapatite situation, that's, that's kind of transpon, uh, you know, transpiring in the market is, you know, now that people are really starting to pay more attention about what they're putting in their bodies and stuff like that.
Um, the, the big thing with, with enamel, with our toothpaste tabs, you know, the reason we stripped vowels out of our name is because we stripped. the superfluous stuff out of toothpaste, right? And, and all that's in our toothpaste is truly what's needed. Uh, it's all naturally occurring. It's not, you know, synthetic stuff.
And so, um, it's just cool because it's, that's really all you need. If you strip it down to the basics, this is what's going to take care of your teeth, keep you the healthiest and you don't have any of these questionable ingredients that are going into some of the other products. Well, y'all heard it here first.
